VAT calculator for adding VAT, extracting VAT from a tax-inclusive amount, and calculating VAT only
Three VAT calculations in one tool

Calculate VAT, add it to a price, or extract it from a VAT-inclusive amount

VAT calculations do not always mean the same thing. Sometimes you have a price before tax and want the final total. Sometimes the amount already includes VAT and you need to separate the base price from the tax inside it. In other cases, you only need the VAT amount itself.

The VAT Calculator brings these cases together in one interface. Choose the calculation type, enter the amount and rate, then review the amount before VAT, the VAT value, and the VAT-inclusive total without running several calculations manually.

In Saudi Arabia, the standard VAT rate is 15% for supplies to which the standard rate applies. Not every product, service, or transaction is treated in exactly the same way, so the calculator is a mathematical tool; the actual tax treatment depends on the applicable rules and the circumstances of the transaction.

ADD VAT EXTRACT VAT ONLY 15%
Choose the right calculation first

What is the difference between adding VAT, extracting VAT, and calculating VAT only?

Many VAT mistakes begin with the wrong operation. Adding 15% to a price before VAT is mathematically different from extracting VAT from a total that already includes it, because the inclusive amount already contains the tax.

Add VAT

Use this when the amount you have is before VAT. The calculator finds the VAT amount and adds it to the base price to produce the total.

Extract VAT

Use this when the amount is VAT inclusive. The calculator separates the VAT portion from the base amount instead of simply subtracting 15% from the total.

VAT only

Use this when you only need the VAT generated by applying the selected rate to a base amount.

A quick example

What happens when 15% VAT is added to SAR 100?

If the price before VAT is SAR 100 and the VAT rate is 15%, the VAT amount is SAR 15 and the VAT-inclusive price becomes SAR 115.

ItemExample valueWhat it means
Price before VATSAR 100.00The base amount before VAT is added.
VAT rate15%The rate applied to the base amount.
VAT amountSAR 15.00The tax generated by applying 15% to SAR 100.
Price including VATSAR 115.00The base price plus the VAT amount.
Understanding the calculation removes the guesswork

How is VAT calculated in each mode?

You do not need to work through the formulas manually when using the calculator, but understanding them helps you confirm that you selected the right mode and interpreted the result correctly.

Add VAT to a base price

VAT amount = price before VAT × VAT rate. The final total is the base price plus the VAT amount.

Extract the pre-VAT price

When the amount already includes VAT, divide the inclusive total by the VAT factor. At 15%, that factor is 1.15.

Extract the VAT amount

Once you know the pre-VAT price, the VAT amount is the difference between the inclusive total and the base amount.

Calculate VAT only

If the amount is before VAT, multiply it by the selected rate to get the VAT amount alone.

The rate is part of the calculation

Do not assume every calculation must use 15%. Use the rate that actually applies to the case you are calculating.

Rounding affects the displayed result

When decimal fractions occur, the calculator may display values to two decimal places for easier reading in riyals and halalas.

A common source of mistakes

Why don't we simply subtract 15% from a VAT-inclusive total?

Because the 15% was originally calculated on the price before VAT, not on the higher VAT-inclusive total. If you have SAR 115 including VAT, subtracting 15% of 115 will not take you back to SAR 100.

The standard rate in Saudi Arabia

15% VAT in Saudi Arabia

The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15% for goods and services that fall under the standard rate. The 15% rate took effect on 1 July 2020 and continues to apply to standard-rated supplies.

1

A 15% standard rate does not mean every transaction, product, or service is treated identically.

2

Some cases may be zero-rated, exempt, or subject to a different VAT treatment depending on the applicable rules and facts.

3

The calculator performs the arithmetic using the rate you enter. It does not determine the legal VAT classification of a transaction.

Read the result in parts

Why show the price before VAT, VAT amount, and total together?

Breaking the calculation into its components makes the result easier to review than showing one final number. You can see where the calculation started, how much VAT was added or extracted, and where the total ended up.

Price before VAT

The base value on which VAT is calculated when the amount is not already VAT inclusive.

VAT amount

The portion representing VAT at the rate you selected.

Price including VAT

The total after combining the base amount and VAT.

Rate used

Shows the VAT percentage used so you can review the calculation and avoid mixing results that use different rates.

Calculation summary

Brings the amount, rate, VAT value, and total into one readable sentence.

Reset

Clears previous inputs so you can start another calculation without old values causing confusion.

How to use it

How do you use the VAT calculator?

Start by deciding whether the amount you have is before VAT or already includes VAT. This matters more than the number itself because it determines which calculation the tool should perform.

Choose the calculation type

Select Add VAT, Extract VAT, or VAT Only.

Enter the amount

Enter the monetary value and make sure you know whether it is before or after VAT.

Check the rate

Confirm the VAT rate used in the calculation, especially when the case does not use the standard rate.

Review the details

Check the base amount, VAT, and total, then use copy or share if needed.

When is the calculator useful?

Everyday uses for VAT calculations

The calculator is useful whenever you need to understand the arithmetic quickly, whether you are reviewing a price, invoice, quotation, or simply comparing an amount before and after VAT.

Pricing a product or service

Estimate the final amount after adding VAT to a base price when the standard calculation applies.

Reviewing a VAT-inclusive amount

See how much of the total is the base price and how much represents VAT.

Comparing quotations

Check whether the prices you are comparing are shown before VAT or after VAT has been added.

Estimating the VAT amount

Find the tax amount on a base figure without focusing on the final total.

Checking a manual calculation

Use the calculator as a quick second check for arithmetic you have already done yourself.

Explaining the result

The detailed summary makes it easier to show how the calculation moved from the base price to VAT and the final total.

Reuse the result easily

Copy or share the VAT calculation

Once the calculation is complete, you can keep the details instead of calculating them again. Copy is useful for moving the figures into a document or message, while share lets you send the result using the options available on your device.

Copy the result

Moves the calculation summary into your clipboard for use in notes, messages, or documents.

Share the calculation

Lets you send the result without manually retyping the base amount, VAT, and total.

Review before sharing

Confirm the amount, rate, and calculation mode before relying on or sending the result.

The calculator handles arithmetic, not tax classification

Important notes before using the result in an invoice or transaction

The arithmetic is simple, but actual VAT treatment can depend on the type of supply, the parties involved, the place of supply, and the relevant rules. The calculator should therefore not replace official guidance when the question is about tax treatment rather than arithmetic alone.

1

First confirm whether the amount you entered is before VAT or VAT inclusive, because selecting the wrong mode changes the result.

2

Use the VAT rate that actually applies to the case. Do not use 15% only because it is the standard rate in Saudi Arabia.

3

Pay attention to rounding when dealing with many line items, because small differences can appear depending on how rounding is applied.

4

For tax invoices, VAT returns, or compliance decisions, refer to ZATCA requirements or qualified tax advice where appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the VAT calculator

What is the standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?
The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15% for supplies to which the standard rate applies.
How do I add 15% VAT to an amount?
If the amount is before VAT, multiply it by 15% to find the VAT, then add that amount to the base price. For example, SAR 100 becomes SAR 115 including VAT.
How do I extract VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount?
At a 15% rate, divide the inclusive amount by 1.15 to find the pre-VAT amount. The difference between the two values is the VAT.
Why can't I simply subtract 15% from the VAT-inclusive price?
Because 15% was originally calculated on the lower pre-VAT amount, while the inclusive total already contains VAT. Extracting VAT therefore requires reversing the original calculation.
What is the difference between VAT amount and VAT-inclusive price?
The VAT amount is the tax generated by applying the rate to the base price. The VAT-inclusive price is the base price plus the VAT amount.
Do all goods and services in Saudi Arabia have 15% VAT?
No. 15% is the standard rate, but some transactions and supplies may have different treatment under the VAT rules. The calculator performs arithmetic and does not classify the transaction for tax purposes.
Can I change the VAT rate in the calculator?
If the rate field is editable, you can enter the rate you need and review it before running the calculation.
Can I use the calculator to prepare a VAT return?
The calculator is useful for arithmetic and quick checks, but it does not replace the records, invoices, and compliance requirements needed to prepare a VAT return.
Can I use the calculator to check an invoice?
You can use it to check the arithmetic, such as the pre-VAT amount, VAT value, and total. Whether the VAT treatment itself is correct depends on the transaction and the applicable requirements.
